We recently had the privilege of joining World War II veteran George Carpenter aboard the historic MGB 81 to mark his 100th birthday.
At Beyond Encryption, we spend our days focused on the future of digital communication.
But now and then, we’re reminded just how deeply the past shapes the freedoms we enjoy today.
Our CEO, CTO, and Financial Controller had the honour of accompanying George Carpenter, a Royal Navy veteran and D-Day signalman, on a commemorative voyage from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard aboard MGB 81 - the last operational Motor Gun Boat of its kind.
What’s the Story?
Built in 1942, MGB 81 was designed for high-speed combat operations along the Channel coast.
She saw action in World War II and played a role in the D-Day landings.
Today, thanks to a meticulous restoration, she continues to preserve her extraordinary wartime legacy.
George, who landed on Utah Beach aged just 18, was joined by his children, Peter and Christine, for the trip.
It was a chance not only to reflect on the past but to celebrate a remarkable personal milestone: George’s 100th birthday.
The day was made possible with support from Powder Monkey Brewing Co., whose founders Mike and Caroline McGeever, along with CEO Andy Burdon, are passionate advocates for veterans and community history.
We were also grateful to the MGB 81 crew - Paul, Tiger, and Dan - and to Hannah Prowse, CEO of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, for their warm welcome and support.
"George Carpenter - a remarkable man from a different time. We need to learn so much from that generation."

Why It Matters
It’s not every day that you meet someone who was there on the shores of Normandy.
For our team, the experience was moving - a reminder that the innovations we build rely on freedoms that were fought for by people like George.
As a company committed to protecting privacy, trust, and resilience in the digital age, we felt privileged to spend time with someone who embodied those values in an entirely different era.
We’ll continue to build the future of secure communication - but with a deep appreciation for the sacrifices and stories that brought us here.
"A superb trip, and a humbling privilege to meet George and his family, a remarkable man.
It is our duty to preserve the memory of the sacrifices made by George’s generation."
Luke Morley, Financial Controller, Beyond Encryption
"Not every day can be about secure email, and today is one of those days.
I salute you, George, and all of your fellow servicemen, young and old."
