A digital postal service for the UK's future

We're building the UK's first digital mailbox to revolutionise the way people receive information from their goods and service providers.

Why do we need change?

The way we communicate is evolving. In the UK, over 87% of adults have a smartphone. Yet, we still rely on the post for much of our important information, with misplaced or piled-up letters resulting in delays, missed appointments, and overlooked renewal dates.

Even when companies send us documents digitally, we have to log into their online portals to find them. The average consumer now has 119 digital accounts, which can be especially frustrating when you need information quickly. What we’re missing is a single place for all our correspondence that only we can access.

What is a digital mailbox?

Our digital mailbox will give you a consolidated view of all your important communications. It will provide instant, secure, and efficient document delivery across all your devices. How would a digital mailbox work?

A digital mailbox, accessible via our smart devices, would enable us to receive information quickly and securely from organisations that currently send it by post.

This technology wouldn't just speed up delivery; it would reduce the carbon impact of unnecessary paper usage and enable us to leverage the information we receive in smarter ways. A digital mailbox could:

  • Store, organise, and search for information more efficiently;
  • Lift dates such as events and policy renewals to set reminders;
  • Encrypt sensitive information to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

This represents a significant step forward in how we manage our information, offering convenience, security, and environmental benefits.

FAQs:

What challenges are facing the postal service?

The postal service is adapting to changes in consumer behaviour, with a shift from physical to digital communication. With email usage skyrocketing to an estimated 347 billion daily in 2023, traditional mail volumes have significantly declined. This trend highlights the need for innovative solutions to bridge the gap.

How will a digital mailbox benefit consumers?

A digital mailbox offers a centralised, secure hub for receiving important documents instantly. It enhances customer experience by reducing delays and missed appointments and provides enriched communications through smart capabilities. This empowers consumers and can support vulnerable individuals by guiding them to the support services they need.

What about those who still want or require physical post?

A digital mailbox complements the postal service, it doesn't replace it. It alleviates pressure on the postal system, improving service for those who need physical mail while supporting efforts to combat digital exclusion and ensuring everyone benefits.

Does a digital mailbox pose an increased security risk?

No. A digital mailbox uses encryption and multi-factor authentication to protect personal details. This offers significantly more security than traditional postal services, ensuring private information is safeguarded from potential threats.
